There are approximately 400 distinct breeds of purebred dogs in the world. A dog is considered purebred if its family tree can be traced back three generations within a single breed. National dog registries maintain pedigrees and stud books for every dog of each breed registered in their countries.

One of the first registries in the world was the Foxhound Stud Book, published in England in 1844.
